Today on my campus, The University of California Santa Cruz, there was a great big hippie protest and half-assed riot. Several hundred misinformed and idealistic "activists" gathered around a couple of trees in which eco-terrorists have placed themselves in a sorry attempt to stop the construction of new medical-science laboratories and classrooms. The UC police, the sheriff, and the some Santa Cruz riot police decided to fence off the area where the tree-huggers had taken up residence, for everyones safety and protection, but the ignorant protesters misinterpreted this as some kind of unreasonable "militarization" of the area and proceeded to try and push and shove their way through the police line, naturally the police tried to hold their ground and used pepper-spray and batons against the unruly activists. The activists succeeded in making some ground as the police realized that the crowds were too misguided and persistent to be dissuaded by mere force and that to continue to hold the line would only result in needless arrests and possible injury to the officers. The hippies felt like they had really accomplished something when the police finally let them sit down peacefully in the area they fought so hard to get to (which is a parking lot, no less).
Today's events really show how stupid and misguided some people are; these activists and eco-terrorists clearly have concept of progress or value for education and betterment of mankind. The sharpest irony is that these STUDENTS are protesting against increasing the STUDENT population at the University, they are essentially protesting against themselves. Furthermore they believe that a few dozen redwood trees should be trump the building of a high-tech bio-medical research facility that would no doubt contribute unfathomed knowledge and life-saving technologies to the fields of medicine and defence. It is clear that these poor 'scholars' have been so corrupted by the rampant environmentalism and anti-humanity philosophies taught at this university. It is strange that some people can be so violently against progress and the healthy future of man and his rational self interest.
